The sea is the source of life on Earth, containing the oldest memories of the planet; born alongside the Earth 4.6 billion years ago, it witnessed the emergence of humanity tens of thousands of years ago. The sea is vast and boundless, regulating and inclusive, yet also harsh and majestic, constantly changing. It is like a father and a mother, equally nurturing all life on Earth.
Suyang, from the Atayal tribe, has a lifelong connection with the sea. Born in the coastal area of Nanho( Klesan ),nature initiated her open dialogue with the sea. In front of the sea, she can be complete honest, sometimes reliant, would admire and she learns, feeling both awe and closeness. Though the sea is silent, it speaks volumes to Suyang, comforting her softest core. Naturally, Suyang's faith and the sea overlap, as the ocean aligns with the worldview of creationism, offering unconditional gifts, vast inclusivity, the operation of laws, and whispering responses, all intensifying Suyang's passionate feelings towards the sea. This led her to use photography objectively to convey her subjective experiences and feelings.
The exhibition "Tamnga•Bsilung / Gaze at the Sea" begins with the clear "Pure Sea," symbolizing a bright hope from a frameless imagination towards the unknown, echoing the start of an adventure.
The "Romantic Sea" section documents Suyang's travels and encounters with seas worldwide, with vibrant visuals symbolizing dynamic growth and emotional gains during her journey.
"Sea and Humans " represents maturity and contemplation, reflecting on thoughts through images of people and the sea, showcasing a refined self.
The immersive real-life depiction of Sea of Nanho (Klesan ) at the end of the exhibition, with the crashing waves, brings children back to their homeland and invites viewers into her nostalgia, the endless coastline.
In Atayal language, “Tmnga “ refers to a gaze filled with strong emotions. Perhaps from a young age, Suyang decided to spend her life watching the sea, as if looking into the eyes of God. Through this exhibition, viewers are invited to immerse themselves in a rich narrative intertwining the sea's essence with faith.
